Hey guys i have a 2001 honda civic lx. Last couple months my tranny has been making a pretty rough grinding noise, you can hear the bearings, and sometimes it will pop right out of 2nd. I live in Michigan and am trying to see if anyone has a good working manual d17 tranny for a non vtec motor for sale? I am willing to drive a state away if thats what i have to do but i am getting my taxes and looking to get another tranny on my dd. Any help would be appreciated

Before you dig in too far I have a bit of advice. I have an automatic so I can't comment on the 7th gen transmission specifically. I have seen this on several Hondas including one of my own and I believe the most common reason to have the transmission slip out of gear is lack of proper service. IE either not changing the transmission fluid or being low. Honda MTF is preferred, GM Synchromesh works great as well (I use it in my 90 Integra b/c the gm dealer is a lot closer to my house than Honda. When you change it be sure to clean the drain plug well, its magnetic and the only real protection against metal fragments and shavings since its basically an oil bath without a filter. If you notice big chunks then you know you have big problems.

I had a friend with a 90 Ef hatch who was convinced his transmission was toast, turns out the fluid looked like it had never been changed. The difference was night and day.

Of course if there is bearing damage then its toast, but I believe its worth the $20 or so to try new fluid before even considering replacing the transmission.

car-part.com is a national network of salvage yards that post their inventory online. I bet you wouldn't need to drive incredibly far to get one. If you want to drive down to Columbus, Ohio I can recommend a couple decent places.

Yeah well the person who owned it before didnt take very good care of my 7th gen, nor was it maintained very well. I dont think i have bad syncros because its not hard to shift or anything. It just pops out of 2nd and reverse sometimes. Im thinking it might be a bad ISB. Yeah ill deff give that website a shot, and i appreciate it as well!! Ive also found that the grinding noise coming from the tranny when in nuetral is my TOB. more than likely im thinking i need an overhaul kit. Know of any companies that make good kits?

Honda has all the parts you would need to rebuild. I highly recommend you try some new fluid first. Since you hear the grind in neurtal I agree its probably the throwout bearing. If that's all you need then you might as well consider a new clutch since you'll be digging in.

http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com is a dealer in New England that does tons of internet orders. The website is awesome for its parts diagrams. They can often beat my local dealer price. The only thing is shipping, if you have a small order there isn't much of a saving, the savings kick in when you order several things at once.

Does it make a roaring noise when driving cuz I had the a1 trans and the main shaft bearing when out....then I blow apart second gear pulling on it! But I would try the fluid first...

So you got a new tranny after this happened right? Same thing is happening to me and I don't know whether to rebuild the tranny or just get a new one. It roars in 1st and my 5th gear pops.

Yeah it likes to roar in 1rst at like 3000rpm but i try to be easy on it and shift at 2 1/2. Im assuming majority if not all bearings are shot, after reading about them im hearing the same thing and nothing but problems. Should i just change the tranny fluid and filter to keep it going as long as possible (not having an easy time finding another 5speed em2 at salvage yards) or will that cause more problems? Because im hearing mixex things, personally i dont think it can do anything but help but i dont want to risk it if it will make it worse.
