I've got a couple educated guesses. Worst case scenario, the ECM has leaking caps it's internal swtching power supply is resetting...and you're in for trouble. Second worst, mostly because it's a pita to get at, the crank sensor could intermittent or contaminated. The engine can't function wthout that indexed position information and so just doesn't. I suggest using an OBDII to read any codes when this happens, especially if it does it while driving also(sudden loss of power). Hope this helps.
