So about 3 months ago, in a moment of weakness, I promised Damian I would make him the engine side bracket for his Stiffy. At first I tried to teach him to fish by measuring everything out for it, drawing it to scale, telling him the material he needed and where to go get it done but all I got was ,"I dunno man. I like turtles."

This got old after about the 57th PM. He wore me down and I promised I would make him one. Well, I finally got around to it tonight. Even though Sugar is waiting for some love in the form of a new cylinder head, kpro and some other goodies, Damian's needs came first.

Here's my diagram and a piece of 4" x 12" 1/4"-thick steel.

I don't have my acetylene torches yet, so I put the stock in my vise with a vise grip on top for leverage.

Applied some heat with my propane torch....

And quickly decided that was not going to work. I would have been there all night and there was no guarantee I was even going to be able to bend that 1/4" steel. I flipped it over and drilled the mounting holes instead.....

Measured and cut the plate, got my 90° brackets and got things lined up......

And then welded the fucker together. 1st pass:

2nd pass, some shaping, and the top hole done. I made one more pass with the welder and there is no way this weld is going to break. The penetration on the weld is nice and deep.

Now it was time to notch it to clear the vane on the motor mount. Damian, this was a giant pain in the ass. Yes I know it looks like shit with all the spatter. I'll get to that.

No I mean it. This took a very long time and I didn't enjoy it.

But I soldiered on and look!!!! It fits!!!

Time for a little signature and she's done!!

I need to degrease it and hit it with some paint as this mild steel will rust in a hurry. It's going to be black because that's what color paint I have right now. Looking at the two of them, I know which one I would rather rock on my Civic! Fuck, I'm half tempted to send you my Ingalls one and I'll keep mine!

Perhaps notching them would have been easier before you welded them together????
Any way looks sick, now to master that metal they call aluminum and then anodizing.... You could make millions. Maybe not millions, but it would be a nice side job.

It might have Matt, probably would have been easier getting the cuts level and would have saved me time filing them flat by hand. Oh well, maybe if I make another one.

Yeah, aluminum is on my horizon. I want to learn how to gas weld it since that's much cheaper than a TIG machine. I'll start teaching myself this summer.

Here's the bracket right before I clear it:

Very nice Clint. Those are some mad tyte fabin skillz yo!

Although i am confused as to why you had to make it. Ingalls makes the engine side mount for it, but you needed to make him one? Did he just lose the bracket or something?
