I know that the upstream o2 sensor affects performance , but does the downstream sensor affect performance too? I know that the two sensors compare their data, but can a malfunctioning downstream sensor screw up fuel economy because it affects the (correctly functioning) upstream sensor?

yes and no for your basic user yes you need it for your advanced user you don't

the primary does all the work the the secondary basically compares and says yes or no. if it says no then you throw a code and your engine light comes on sometimes it will try to correct by adding more fuel. if it says yes then every thing is fine and no engine light.

I don't run a secondary o2 sensor but I am also running k-pro and have no cat which is about the only way to get away from running a secondary o2 sensor
