Default Welding/Postioning V-Bands

Need opinions on welding on the V-bands to my exhaust. The pipe fits inside the flanges. Do you guys leave a gap between the two pipes, butt them together, or let one pipe protrude into the other flange?

So I am guessing since my flanges do not have a lip, I should extend the engine side pipe past the end of the flange.

I've always just left them flush and have never had a problem with leaks or fitment.
