: DIY: Painting Rims
lifes_simple 11-30-2007, 04:06 PM this is my first DIY so sorry if its bad -_-
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v603/baibefaice14/my%20car/100_0696.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v603/baibefaice14/my%20car/100_0694.jpg
1. Your gonna need rims paint of your desired color. I got bronze to match my SSM. I got 3 of these cans, one is the color, 2 is the primer (black) and 3 is the clear coat.
PURCHASED : AUTOZONE
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v603/baibefaice14/my%20car/100_0695.jpg
2. Next you'll need sand paper to sand down all the minor scratches and dings on your rims. 600P is the best one to use IMO.
PURCHASED: AUTOZONE
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v603/baibefaice14/my%20car/100_0697.jpg
3. Masking tape. This will come in handy when you want to cover up anything you dont want to paint. I used this previously to make my red lip but now im getting rid of it.
PURCHASED: ACE HARDWARE
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v603/baibefaice14/my%20car/100_0698.jpg
4. This is my rim to start off with. I liked it and all, the only thing is that it didn't match SSM ( Satin Silver Mat.)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v603/baibefaice14/my%20car/100_0699.jpg
5. I then took a bunch of index cards and put it between the lip and the tire so that while painting, i wouldn't get it on my tires.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v603/baibefaice14/my%20car/100_0700.jpg
6. Don't forget to cover the valve core cover unless you want it colored lol. I used masking tape for this one.
7. I forgot to take a picture but make sure you sand down the rim pretty well smoothening out any dings, scratches, etc.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v603/baibefaice14/my%20car/100_0701.jpg
8. Time for the primer. After cleaning and sanding the rims down. Spray light coats of Primer on the rims leaving about 10 minutes in between to dry. Do about 5-7 coats.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v603/baibefaice14/my%20car/100_0704.jpg
9. This is what my rims looked like after primering.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v603/baibefaice14/my%20car/100_0705.jpg
10. Do the same thing as you did with the primer but this time with your desired rim color. About 5-7 coats and 10 minutes in between. Make sure you don't miss any spots!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v603/baibefaice14/my%20car/100_0707.jpg
11. Now do the same thing as you did with those two colors but this time with clear coar to give it a shine and protection. 7-8 layers of clear coat 10 minutes in between.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v603/baibefaice14/my%20car/100_0708.jpg
12. This is what mine turned out to be like after I was finished. When your done, give about 1 hour of drying before placing it back on your car. CONGRATS YOUR DONE =D
HERE MY CAR NOW AS IT STANDS.

bobbysworld 12-01-2007, 07:43 PM how well would it stick to chrome?.....i'll be getting some wheels in the spring most likely, but i'm still using my gay chrome motegi's for winter wheels. i'd like to paint them
lifes_simple 12-01-2007, 08:55 PM use primer first and itll stick like no other.
fxv686 12-01-2007, 09:18 PM did you use any technique in spraying it? like how far did you spray the can?
Default. 12-01-2007, 09:47 PM i agree with this DIY, BUT!! i think you should clean all the rims with a degreser first!!!! than prime, or some wet sanding in between.
imroadk1ll 12-01-2007, 11:09 PM i had a plastic piece there so i cut it out, im getting fogs soon so i can install it. thanks for the comment =)
oh ok i thought someone stole them

Sand then prime those bitches.....
lifes_simple 12-02-2007, 07:32 AM i sprayed from left to right about 6 inches away from the rims.
bobbysworld 12-02-2007, 12:22 PM sounds easy haha, just didnt know if it would be harder for it to stick
rollen01 12-10-2007, 09:44 PM they look good
civicman1988 12-11-2007, 04:01 PM you shoukd use a good clear coat to protect the rims. Like a clear they use on the cars. The cheap clears is cheap. what you pay for you get. I learned that on the body work i have done
j182j 01-18-2008, 03:38 PM They look nice, a good way to refresh worn out rims!
wickedbautista 01-21-2008, 09:19 PM i am going to try this with some ls mesh i bought from craigslist

lifes_simple 08-24-2008, 08:06 PM I would if you live by me =)

em2love 09-14-2008, 11:41 AM looks really good!
how's it holding up?
and what is your car lowered on?
sens3i 09-18-2008, 07:45 AM very usfull for me as im guna refurb mine n then sell on
lifes_simple 09-18-2008, 10:52 AM its still on there and it's been over a year or 2 now i think ? Also im pretty sure you can do that to hubcaps but why would you? lol. Also sad to say but I sold them already, im back on my hubcaps.. =/
LoLoKeeks 09-22-2008, 11:21 PM i painted my rims but for some reason it came out rough and off. i'm assuming its because i did it when it was windy and outside in front of my house. i want to redo them again to make them look better and have that shine. but should i just sand down the roughness or something and paint them again but in the garage? i need help asap :(
lifes_simple 09-23-2008, 09:40 AM Sand them down real well until its smooth. Make sure you use primer and your not in a windy space. Also do a left to right movement and wait like 5 minutes between each coat.
LoLoKeeks 09-23-2008, 12:53 PM what grit number should i use to sand them down? should i stick to 600? after i send them down, what should i use to wipe off the debris?
lifes_simple 09-23-2008, 08:20 PM Im not familiar with the grits but id say use the one thats not rough, you just want to make sure its enough to make it smooth but not dig into the rim and gouge it. After you sand it down wash it off w/ a hose and let it dry. Re-Primer it and then do the left to right painting pattern w/ the color you want.
baldpinoyizme 09-28-2008, 11:24 AM the gun metal looks the best imo.
so do i still sand down my stock rims?
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b143/baldpinoyizme/IMAG0065.jpg
lifes_simple 09-28-2008, 11:55 AM just clean it and make sure you get all the dirt out, you shouldn't HAVE to sand them down, but then again you should do a very fine grit so that the primer sticks to it. If i were you' id sand it down still.
baldpinoyizme 10-06-2008, 10:05 PM alright sounds good. pretty sure im not going to mess with these but i was jw.
but will the sanding scratch it? even though it'll be painted, that would still suck.
lifes_simple 10-07-2008, 01:40 PM use a very fine sandpaper enough to make it smooth but not enough to scratch it. ;)
magixstik 10-08-2008, 09:32 PM looks awesome bro..!:bowrofl:
shortyaguilera 10-11-2008, 03:28 PM Great DIY!!!

zeikial2000 12-18-2008, 01:27 AM Me and my buddy just did his stock WRX wheels we painted them black with a blue lip and they turned out great the only thing we didn't do was prime it first but over all we did the exact same thing you did and they look great!
JerseyStrong 12-18-2008, 02:57 AM I'm not a fan of painting rims personally. No matter what you do, they're going to chip. Especially around the lug nut area.
steve35red 12-18-2008, 04:34 PM nice i want to paint my stock ones
NotQuiK@aLL 02-26-2009, 07:09 PM I'm not a fan of painting rims personally. No matter what you do, they're going to chip. Especially around the lug nut area.
i Disagree. If you take your time and do it well. you will have no problems. I did mine and have had them for almost 6 months and no chips or ANYTHING at all.
haha, good write up. I just did my stock ones a couple weeks ago and been driving on it through snow and salt and its still holding up great. I'm thinking of repainting to bronze though.. not sure.

kondom 08-24-2009, 09:30 PM nice diy ty
ForcedFedEm2 08-26-2009, 06:23 PM Was that bronze u used the duplicolor bronze.... I was considering it but didn't think it would look good with Artic Blue Pearl.. After seeing it on ur wheels it actually might look pretty good.
wcrocco 08-26-2009, 06:38 PM wicked props on the idea with the index cards man im doin this in the winter:tup:
ForcedFedEm2 08-26-2009, 07:33 PM I highly recommend u not to do it in the winter. I did my cuz's in the winter and we ended up doing them in the shed with the heater on. Paint won't stick in the cold. Either do it now while its still hot out or wait and do them in the spring.
Chuggins 09-09-2009, 10:27 PM Quick cell phone picture. Heres mine just finished the other day, two different color purples on those rims and all that good stuff, i didnt sand anything though and it came out great. Before anyone says anything, i know i need a drop, i've got springs on the way. i'll have some nice pictures up sunday from a meet coming this weekend. they look better in person too. :D
I need a new banner now lol.
Nice write up. props.:werd:

Chuggins 09-29-2009, 06:50 PM hook it up man, ill back you up  not ricer at all. baller status :bubbrubb:
newfiehonda 10-06-2009, 06:41 PM That Dupli-color paint looks good and is ok in a warm climate.I painted my wheels with the same stuff only white. But,I live in Canada where the weather and roads are crap. The rims are now sand blasted from rock chips and cracked up from expansion with cold temps at night and warm in the day. The paint don't stretch. I am now going to do them in base/clear.
black02em2 10-09-2009, 02:43 PM im in canada too, ive tried painting my rims before but failed cuz they always chipped. you recommend any particular paint?
Chuggins 01-19-2010, 04:28 PM im wondering if it would be a good idea to use an electric sander, like a da sander to remove old spray paint so i can re spray.
medlin 01-21-2010, 02:04 AM Im going to give it a try as well. Its time for a change on my 17's. If they turn out good I might give it a shot on the 20's as well.

^^ that looks sick. The hardest thing I find is covering up an area, especially the outer lip of the wheel which you DO NOT want the paint to fall on. I have tried using masking/painters tape but I have sucked from time to time again lol.
fanger 02-07-2010, 08:51 PM still debating whether i should do this to my stockies or just to find someone to powercoat them. just don't want to spray my wheels and have to redo them every 6 months to cover up chips.

thanks :D and yes you're right, covering it as clean as possible is a very tedious task.. and taking off the tape after painting is another story.. since I'm a noob in this I accidentally chipped off some paint with it on the rim (very very small though)..
well, lesson learned, I should've taken more time in the initial wet sanding phase... :)
here a noob question: in cases like this when do you usually take off the masking tape? on the same day you finished painting when the paint is already dry but still fresh? or do you let the paint dry for a few days first?
thanks in advance :)

fanger 02-08-2010, 08:55 AM ^^^ how many coats of clear did you use?
medlin 02-08-2010, 10:09 AM Damn those turned out great..
thanks, i hope the paint doesn't fade anytime soon..
i applied 2 clear coats, which emptied the whole spray can
fado5 02-11-2010, 02:15 PM hey i wanna ad something to this that gives an awesome result... buy some of the sponge brushes and some hardwood floor lacquer like minwax and paint it on as a top coat... works great... gives it an awesome shine and it is very tough http://www.minwax.com/products/images/helmsman_260x270.jpg thats what we did when we paint my bfs wheels... and when we did our strut tower bars... and I plan on using it again if I paint my wheels
WHAAA???? Serious? does this actually work??
if it does than im guessing its not for white as floor lacquer has a kinda yellowish tint so would turn my championship white into a yellowish championship white.. Yea or nay??
fado5 02-11-2010, 02:18 PM win those wheels turned out the shit, good job
better to take the tape off asap cos if left 2 long the glue goes all weird and is a nightmare to get off
hondahumper 02-11-2010, 02:33 PM Ill just go powdercoat mine :coffee:
thanks fado5, you're right, I also read somewhere that the masking tape has to be pulled off at a steep angle to avoid chipping.
peter7del 02-15-2010, 12:36 AM how well would it stick to chrome?.....i'll be getting some wheels in the spring most likely, but i'm still using my gay chrome motegi's for winter wheels. i'd like to paint them
Hey just sand the chrome with like a 600 grit and the paint will stick to the chrome. I painted the chrome hood and trunk trim a couple of days ago and the paint stuck lol
peter7del 02-15-2010, 12:37 AM Hey just sand the chrome with like a 600 grit and the paint will stick to the chrome. I painted the chrome hood and trunk trim a couple of days ago and the paint stuck lol I just need to update my sig pic he he!
