civicman1988 07-03-2007, 10:24 AM will be using this shortly good post
SDhondarider 07-04-2007, 12:24 AM One thing I would like to add to that DIY (even though its old and from civic forums) is an easier way to install the rear shocks. Instead of pushing with an allen on the end of the bottom bolt that attaches the strut to the control arm, it is way easier to disconnect the endlink from the rear sway bar (if you have one) as well as disconnect the single horizontal bolt that attaches the brake disc to the camber arm. By removing these it makes it super easy to not only uninstall the rear shocks, but makes it significantly easier to reinstall the shocks.
Oh and just rent a tie rod separator from autozone or kragen. It's free so get it and save yourself some trouble. Get the one that has a bolt that pushes on the bottom of the tie rod. Way easier then the one you hammer in, just be sure it's competely centered and turn slowly to make sure it will pop the tie rod out instead of shifting and pushing up the edges to warp the threads.
RHCP0801 07-04-2007, 11:02 AM i just used a screwdriver to push the bolt through as someone else was unbolting the bolt, it was very easy and the tie rod process in the DIY is also easy...i have lowered 3 cars and no problems yet
SDhondarider 07-04-2007, 08:02 PM How do you get the rear shock/spring back in? Mine and turbos was always way hard to get back in so we had to either put a jack under the strut to compress it or disconnect the camber arm and endlinks.

Have a friend stand on the rotor as you slide the shock/spring assembly into place
RHCP0801 07-04-2007, 10:37 PM yea everytime i did someone had to be standing on the control arm while the other person was trying to push the bolt through, now im not fat and neither are my friends so each time i lowered the car we had to be jumping up and down lol
5spoke 07-05-2007, 08:36 AM haha yeah well I had my dad stand on it for me he is like 210 lbs it went pretty smoothly

yeah i trusted my life trying to get that back bolt on your car and my car twice, i left my life in the hands of 35 dollar pepboy jack stands lol
RHCP0801 07-06-2007, 07:01 PM yea haha had my life in the hands of those things too lol, those cheap things have served us well though lol
AF_EM2 10-30-2007, 09:07 AM LOL I used this ghetto compressor and used a jack to pry down the control arm in the back. Kinda of a scary day that day.

civic995 01-27-2008, 02:00 AM coes any body have the stock suspension

gettin them out was easy for me... i just unbolted the one bolt at the bottom and then the two on top, then i used a screw driver to knock it off. when putting them back on i used a jack and a socket to raise the strut high enough so that i could align it with the hole and... walah! did it more than 5 times by myself...
cokydevil 02-27-2008, 11:39 AM Great article nice pics.

i always do it the same way with a jack and a socket
austinwb 03-22-2008, 12:26 PM what about camber if i drop my car and 1.5 inches are my tires gonna wear shitty
Greeenie 03-22-2008, 12:33 PM thats why u get a camber kit
JT*ES1 03-22-2008, 12:33 PM what about camber if i drop my car and 1.5 inches are my tires gonna wear shitty
yes it will but no too much...
RHCP0801 03-22-2008, 06:18 PM you should still get a camber kit, if you lower your car 1" or 4" you should still get one
Maximized4Door 11-03-2008, 09:03 AM After using this DIY - I have one suggestion - get the tir rod seperator...
I mushroomed the end of the tie rod with the hammer and spent a whole day dremeling it down to get the nut back on there - tow truck was enroute to be repaired when it finally went back on.
Daddy 11-03-2008, 09:05 AM another way to get it off is to just un thread the nut far enough so that when you hit it with a hammer you hit the nut and not the end of hte tie rod end.
or just hit the arm of the strut. ive done this like 5 times now, and all you do it hit the strut and the tie rod will pop up. no need to hit the tie rod in anyway.
Mralbino 11-03-2008, 10:34 AM Yeah i just beat the shit out of the Strut arm with a hammer and the tie rod will just pop right out... i've swapped my suspension like 10 times lol.
pretty good manual, going to use it when i will get my coils:)
elementalchain 03-03-2009, 10:01 PM amazing diy. i did it all by myself and it took me 4 hours for the front and 1.5 for the rear. this was done with just and OEM jack. I had to do each side one at a time. Also i followed it step by step. A+
metalviper 03-04-2009, 11:25 AM please buy a hydraulic jack, a scissor jack is not safe to use for this kind of job
elementalchain 03-04-2009, 03:17 PM please buy a hydraulic jack, a scissor jack is not safe to use for this kind of job
will do. i was at school and didnt have a hydraulic jack at my disposable so i just winged it.
crazy8skater 09-03-2009, 11:05 AM i got front two springs in and back left spring in, but my back right lower strut bolt is frozen to the bushing and we couldnt even get it off with an impact wrence at 120 psi?!?! :dunno:
has this happend to anyone else?? and what did you do about it
kenbo'sboost'dD17 09-03-2009, 11:09 AM Omg!! I already told u bro...It happens a lot....you will need to get the bolt cut out and put a new bushing in...they might fuck up the shock so that is why the one shop told you to get new ones
crazy8skater 09-03-2009, 11:13 AM Alright man thanks haha, i think im gonna just call the shop thta says they can do the bushing replacement, but im scared cuz if i spend the money to get the bolt cut off, then i wont have enough money for new shocks if they do fuck it up :ohnoes:
kenbo'sboost'dD17 09-03-2009, 11:15 AM well really it should not be much at all to just cut one bolt...but ya if they fuck it up your looking at about $80 each if you get the rears in Tokico blues...thats what I got tho and love them
crazy8skater 09-03-2009, 11:17 AM yeah, they said that they were gonna charge me $150 bucks to cut the bolt, replace the bushing, and replace the bolt, im kinda fucked if i need new struts after that :ohnoes: thats why i am not sure if i should wait to do it and just ride high in the back right :ugh:
xxxem2xxx 09-03-2009, 11:29 AM good DIY it was very usefull for me....thanks
Chuggins 09-10-2009, 11:50 PM This is great, only one th ing, no matter what i did, my tie rod wouldnt come loose.
Hooplin 09-11-2009, 12:46 AM I just bought a tie rod remover and mine came off easy and it only cost me 7 bucks.
Phusion 09-11-2009, 07:14 AM I hammered mine out. One came out in a few hits, but the other one wouldn't and I ended up warping it. Bought a new one for 40 bux. Lesson learned.:pisschair:
Chuggins 09-13-2009, 12:44 PM Oh i rented one from the auto parts store, worked like a charm!
exojoc02 01-09-2010, 07:36 AM Hey so me and my boy did this diy on my car yesterday and it went pretty well but I couldn't get the back springs on plus I really didn't wanna put them on because I don't have a camber kit yet! Now my car is sitting kinda staggered because I still got the stock springs in the back, is this bad to keep it like this for a while, I like the way it looks like this??
i kinda wanna see this, take pics and no its okay just puts a little more stress on the front bushings i'd assume.
PS. didnt look at dates sorry
ourbloodykisses 05-02-2010, 05:07 PM no its just a front rake...

take pics and post it. I had coilovers on my 96 rolla years ago n i did that on purpose for a few days. i use to change my settings all the time jus for fun.
02SatinSedan 06-05-2010, 10:23 PM I just used this diy. It helped a lot. It's decent, could b a tad better but it got the job done. Maybe a few more pics would help 8.5 out of 10. I'd recommend this to others. That tie rod was tough for real. I had to go buy a separater. But couldn't get the left one in all they. Although I was able to get the pin in. Now there's a noice when I turn. I think it's the tie rod. Ugh. I'm tired might look at it tmrw might not. Too tired man.
elcentrobaby 06-05-2010, 10:31 PM ^^^Like a popping noise? That's from not indexing properly. Make sure everything is lined up correctly.
02SatinSedan 06-05-2010, 10:41 PM ^^^Like a popping noise? That's from not indexing properly. Make sure everything is lined up correctly.
Jea a popping noise what the heck? It goes pop pop pop. When I turn left. Everything seemed good I tighten everything well. Jus the tie rod thats all I can think of it didn't go down all the way when i replaced it. Sounds like my tire is rubbin on the fender. That's the sound it imitates. Pop pop pop.
ourbloodykisses 06-06-2010, 08:46 AM its the spring not seated where its supposed to be. lol trust me, you arent rubbing your tires on fenders.
02SatinSedan 06-06-2010, 10:57 PM its the spring not seated where its supposed to be. lol trust me, you arent rubbing your tires on fenders.
oh i know im not, just trying to give an example of a similiar sound. i rubbed with my 17s on dropzones on my 96 corolla. so i was just describing a similar sound.
ourbloodykisses 06-07-2010, 03:56 PM gotcha, hope your car settles out dude
rocker_flyer 06-07-2010, 04:12 PM Really nice find, will use once i have the money to get the sets i want. Thx for the find
btbam006 06-07-2010, 11:41 PM Using this tomorrow after work to put on my Eibach prokits, gonna be wierd doin this with jack stands. And I feel pretty skeptical about the whole no spring comprerssor thing, especially after workin as a tech at a Honda dealer for 4 years.... guess I just gotta man up and do it :P
Ill post pics tomorrow when its done, shouldnt be too long (as long as nothing is frozen lol) considering I have done a ton of these, down side is.... no impact guns :wtc:
btbam006 06-09-2010, 08:24 AM Well everything went smoothly, besides the fact that both strut mounts fell apart and the ball bearings all fell out... lol
didnt really use this diy only cause I have done these before but you wrote it up well and everything follows the proper way, took me and one other buddy about 3.5 hours to do.
Lowered it on Eibach ProKits, had a huge gap before, currently sittin at 1.5 to 2 finger gap (if that) all the way around. Looks SOOOO much better!
Ill post pics up once I get it cleaned and find a good pic spot :P
Oh, forgot to add, no noises, clunking or anything... just make sure everything is lined up and its facing the right way. Even after cleaning the strut mount and putting it back together, stil dont have a problem.
02SatinSedan 06-16-2010, 01:56 PM still waiting on those pics!

02SatinSedan 06-21-2010, 01:52 AM nice, looks better. so when u getting new wheels?
btbam006 06-21-2010, 10:46 AM itll probably be a while before I get new wheels, they are just a big investment that I really cant afford at the moment.
02SatinSedan 06-23-2010, 08:40 AM I c so what's next? Getting sides n rear? Painting that lip?
btbam006 06-23-2010, 09:57 AM I think im gonna leave the lip, I like the silver/black theme it has going. Next is going to probably be tint, mud guards, and probably sides
